Quick verdict
Choose Tally if: You want the best value, need unlimited responses, or prefer a fast, Notion-style building experience. It’s the best free form builder available today — we tested Tally end to end in our hands-on Tally review. Typeform we read from official documentation only; we did not create an account.
Choose Typeform if: Your form is customer-facing, completion rate is your top priority, and you have budget for it. The conversational UX and brand recognition are real advantages for lead gen and brand surveys.

The pricing gap is huge
At the entry level:
- Tally Free = unlimited responses for $0
- Typeform Free = 10 responses/month for $0
Even if you pay:
- Tally Pro = $24/mo, unlimited responses, custom domain, remove branding
- Typeform Plus = $56/mo (page text, re-captured 2026-09-26), 1,000 responses, no custom domain, branding removed
For the price of one month of Typeform Plus, you could have 2.5 months of Tally Pro with unlimited everything.
And the response cap on Typeform is shared across all forms — one viral survey can burn your entire month’s quota.
Design and UX
Typeform: cinematic and conversation-led
Typeform invented the one-question-per-screen format. Every form feels like an experience: smooth slide transitions, progress bars, full-screen layouts, and thoughtful micro-animations.
Pros:
- Respondents recognize and trust the format
- Higher perceived quality = better completion rates
- Mobile-optimized by default
- Polished templates for every use case
Cons:
- Limited customization — it always looks like Typeform
- Slower to fill out for long forms (one question at a time)
- The “Typeform look” can feel generic to frequent survey-takers
Tally: clean and document-like
Tally uses a Notion-style block editor on a scrolling page. It’s not trying to be cinematic — it’s trying to be fast and functional. You can enable one-question-at-a-time mode, but it doesn’t have Typeform’s transition polish.
Pros:
- Fast to build and fast to fill out
- All questions visible at once (default)
- Notion-like editor is instantly familiar
- More layout flexibility (sections, columns, etc.)
Cons:
- Less “wow” factor for first-time respondents
- One-question mode exists but lacks Typeform’s smoothness
- Less brand recognition
Winner: Typeform for presentation, Tally for speed.
Features and functionality
Form building
- Tally: Slash-command block editor (type
/to insert fields). Fast once you know it. Supports 20+ question types, calculations, answer piping, hidden fields. - Typeform: Drag-and-drop builder with live preview. Slightly more guided — good for beginners. Supports most of the same question types.
Both cover all the essentials: short/long text, multiple choice, dropdowns, scales, ratings, file uploads, date/time, and payments.
Logic and branching
- Tally: Conditional logic with if/else rules, calculations, and answer piping. Covers 90% of use cases.
- Typeform: Logic jumps, branch-based endings, advanced calculations, scoring. Slightly more depth for complex forms.
Winner: Typeform (by a small margin). Tally covers most needs, but Typeform has deeper logic capabilities for complex surveys and quizzes.
Integrations
- Tally: 30+ native integrations (Google Sheets, Notion, Airtable, Slack, Zapier, Make, Webhooks). Webhook support on the free plan is a big plus.
- Typeform: 100+ native integrations including HubSpot, Salesforce, Marketo, and more enterprise tools.
Winner: Typeform for breadth, Tally for value. Tally has everything most small teams need; Typeform wins on enterprise CRM integrations.
AI features
Both have AI form builders that generate forms from text prompts. Both work well — neither is dramatically better than the other. Typeform also offers AI analysis of responses (Insights AI) on higher plans.
Use case breakdown
Best for startups and small teams: Tally
Unlimited responses for free means you never hit a cap unexpectedly. Add Pro for $24/mo when you need custom domains or white-labeling.
Best for marketing/lead gen: Typeform
If your form is part of a paid ad funnel or high-intent landing page, the higher completion rate Typeform delivers can easily justify the cost.
Best for internal forms/HR: Tally
For employee surveys, feedback forms, or internal requests, the extra polish of Typeform doesn’t matter. Tally’s free tier covers everything.
Best for customer research: Depends on volume
- Low volume (<100 responses/month), high importance → Typeform for the better experience
- Any other volume → Tally (unlimited responses, same core functionality)
Best for embedded website forms: Tally
Tally’s free plan supports embedding with no branding removal requirement (the Tally logo is small and at the bottom). Typeform shows larger branding on Free/Basic plans.
Can you switch from Typeform to Tally?
Yes, with some caveats:
- Your forms will look different. Typeform’s cinematic transitions don’t translate 1:1 to Tally’s format.
- Simple forms migrate easily. Basic contact forms, surveys, and quizzes transfer straightforwardly.
- Complex logic may need rebuilding. Advanced branching and calculation-heavy forms may need manual rework.
- Integrations mostly carry over. Both connect to the same major tools via Zapier/Make.

Our honest take: Most people should start with Tally. The free tier is genuinely useful (not a demo), and you’ll know if you ever need Typeform’s polish. We tested Tally’s free plan end-to-end — form creation, publishing, submissions, webhook, CSV export — and it all works. On Typeform we read official documentation and pricing only; we did not create an account. Read our full Tally hands-on review for the evidence.
If you specifically need the Typeform experience for customer-facing forms and you have budget, Typeform delivers on its promise — it’s just expensive for what you get.
